Tens of thousands marched for Gilad Shalit this week. Hila baked cookies. Delicious sugar and cinnamon coated cookies. I know, I tasted one. But I was only allowed one – she baked them for Aviva and Noam Shalit. She baked them with love from the depth of her heart. Love and sorrow. Sorrow for the fate of abducted Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, held captive by Hammas for four years. Love for Aviva and Noam, his parents, who touch her heart with their plight for Gilad’s release. Hila felt she must do something to contain her sorrow and convey her love. Cookies.

Following twelve days, over two hundred kilometres and approximately 200,000 accumulated active supporters who joined along the way, Aviva and Noam Shalit lead the march for Gilad’s release, “March For His Life”, and arrived in Jerusalem this Thursday. Aviva and Noam now plan to stay in the protest tent opposite the residence of PM Benyamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem and return home only with their son Gilad. Hila’s heart goes out to them, and to Gilad. Cookies.

What do you say to Aviva and Noam? To parents who have not embraced their son for four years? To parents who miss their son and worry about him, waking up in the morning and going to sleep at night? Are they at all able to sleep at night? How do they go on with their life? How can you ease their pain? Cookies.

Listening to Aviva Shalit speaking to the thousands at Independence Park in Jerusalem Hila cried. She cried for an Israeli soldier in captivity for an endless four years. She cried for a mother in captivity of an unavoidable struggle to reunite with her son. She cried, and decided to bake … cookies.

Dear Shalit Family, preying with you together for Gilad’s quick return home. Hila Alon, Jerusalem. She put the note in with … the cookies
