meeting a friend

tomorrow i am meeting a friend. a friend i have never met before, face to face, but with whom i have shared a friendship dear to my heart for quite a few years now. a friend who has made me think, made me smile, made me look and made me listen. a friend who is traveling a road of the spirit (and also flying over 1400 nautical miles to accomplish it!)

am i excited? yes! very much so! among the many intimate thoughts we have shared over the years we hoped we could one day ‘walk the road together’. that day has come.

what has any of this to do with photography? well, my friend and i share a passion for photography. we ‘met’ on a photography forum. we’re going to ‘walk the road together’ and shoot some photos along the way.

photography has brought me so much satisfaction … even in ways i hadn’t imagined…

shoot you at the airport, friend.

quality family time

i think it may sometimes be necessary to really get away in order to enjoy quality, undisturbed, family time. where better than beautiful ireland?! although uri couldn’t join us i truely enjoyed a week and a half with dorit, tamar and hila. almost no distractions, no daily pressures, 24 hours a day of family, together. an opportunity for renewed bonding and strengthening of relationships as friends, beyond just being a husband and a father.

ireland 2007, whiterocks beach, dunluce

the only things i could have done without were shopping, shopping and more shopping! traveling with three ladies isn’t easy in this respect but i guess if they enjoy so much, why not?!

not a happy birthday

gilad shalit is 21 years old today. this is gilad’s 2nd birthday in captivity, somewhere in gaza, ever since his abduction on june 25th 2006. a young israeli soldier waits in a dark damp cellar, deep underground, secluded from the world, counting the days. perhaps he does not even realize it is his birthday today.

gilad shalit

gilad may be an out of the ordinary young man, but as a soldier his destiny matters hugely to all israelis. military service plays a huge part in every israeli life. in a small country with a large recruited army everyone has a close relative or friend serving in the idf. no israeli can fail to be moved by gilad’s smiling face on the front pages of israeli newspapers, calling for his release and remembering his birthday, and by the ordeal of his family.

father, noam shalit, stands by a table decorated for a birthday party for gilad in the rabin square in tel-aviv. hila and i drove to tel-aviv to show our support for the family. it was the saddest birthday party i have ever attended.

friendship

dear father josep,

it is beautiful!

i have been walking around all week with a note from the post office, notification of a package, in my wallet. the note did not state the source of the package and i was in no hurry to pick it up.

after receiving your email yesterday, the first thing i did this morning was to run to the post office and i have just returned. the haggadah de poblet is beautiful and i am very happy to now be the owner of copy 575/1000.

i am happy for several reasons; first of all i think it is extraordinary for the opportunity to inspect a jewish manuscript from somewhere around the 14-16 centuries, probably the only jewish manuscript that survived in spain from that time. it’s like getting into a time machine and going back several hundred years, witnessing the preservation of tradition. every year on passover (‘pesach’ in hebrew) we read from a haggadah, telling the story of the exodus  of ancient hebrews from bondage in egypt, and the texts today are exactly the same as those in haggadah de poblet.

but mostly the haggadah de poblet signifies for me our very special friendship. although i did not have the opportunity to see the original when visiting in abadia de santa maria de poblet, but when researching for my article for ‘teva hadvarim’ i was most fortunate to meet you. it was this special manuscript that brought about our special relationship.

therefore i am very happy to have my own copy. a historic book that will for me, signify friendship.

it is beautiful! thank you my friend!

johno

youth minister johnathan thomas, dedicated to God, family, youth and humanity, photography and writing his thoughts (johno, did i get the order right?).  a man i admire and am honored to call my friend, although we have never met (yet).

i first made johno’s acquaintance on the smugmug forums. i think some of the first posts johno submitted, that made a big impression on me, had to do with a week long camp for local youth in uganda, somewhere at the beginning of 2005. he came back from uganda with a photo i fell in love with immediately. it took the editors of ’kodak photo of the day’ a few more weeks to recognise its beauty and strength - march 11, 2005 in times square n.y. (enter march 11, 2005 in the search box).

i got hooked on johno’s forum posts, displaying wonderful photographic work and written eloquently with passion and intensity from the heart. johno’s evolving into blogging swept me into both his blog (The Road to Gaza), and i think was one of the greatest motivational factors in beginning to write my own. johno has a way of seeing into peoples’ hearts, zooming his lens into their soul and and conveying his insights with words; pure, fresh, clean words and thoughts.

johno is running two additional photographic projects alongside his blog; Photography 52, a photo of the week display of his work, and 52 Photos 52 Lives, an amazing and passionate person of the week feature. you don’t want to miss it!

i asked johno why he calls his blog “The Road to Gaza”. johno’s reply was not a short one, nor simple. actually he split it up into four parts linked to here:

Road to Gaza (part 1)

Road to Gaza (part 2)

Road to Gaza (part 3)

Road to Gaza (part 4)

Road to Gaza (part 5) Conclusion

i have to admit i have not yet reached an ultimate understanding of johno’s thoughts. i think i’m on the right track but the complete essence of johnathan’s journey of the spirit still evades me. i wrote johno that if he ever decides to literally/physically take the journey on the road to gaza, i would love to meet him and travel the road together.

a photoblog post with no photos … hmm. ok! go see johno’s photos!!

nir

edited:i’ve added a link to jonathan’s Road to Gaza (part 5) Conclusion. it did help me to see johno’s thoughts more clearly, to better understand what this wonderful man’s life is all about. i do not share johno’s religious beliefs, actually i have very little religious beliefs if any at all, but i admire johno for his love of ‘his neighbor’ and his willingness and dedication to stretch out a helping hand. whatever, or whoever it is driving johno, he is simply a great human being.

attention! officer on deck! … soon

uri has come a long way since…

 uri’s draft, march 2006

and since …

basic training saturday visit, april 2006

more than 12 months into his service uri has undergone rigorous training, hours of study and many nautical miles in numerous types of crafts. he has strengthened and toughened. he has matured and ripened. he has developed seeds dorit & i planted,  qualities that waited to bloom. and he is blooming! uri is content, full of interest, enjoying the challenges, eager for more! and we are so proud of him!

friday we were invited to haifa to take part in a ceremony honoring his graduation of the advanced stage of naval officers course. 33 graduated from over 100 that began the course. he still has a long way to go – another 16 months before he is fully ordained an officer in the israeli navy, but friday’s ceremony commemorates a significant milestone in his naval training.

we were fussy over the need to leave jerusalem at 06:00 to be in haifa by 08:00, but uri and his team mates left base at 03:00 to manually row zodiac inflatable boats in the cold mediterranean night prior to greeting us for the ceremony.

gathered near the beach with other proud parents, siblings and friends, we first saw them coming in from the sea. everyone cheered them as they rowed their last few meters to shore.

the ceremony was festive as the cadets marched and stood in formation and their officers, wearing festive navy whites, ran the ceremony.

lieutenant colonel yosi mashita, commander of the navy academy, shakes uri’s hand after pinning a gold commanders’ pin to uri’s left shirt collar

a gold commanders’ pin …

a symbol of the understanding of the value of life, the life of others, the commander’s responsibility for their lives - a legacy passed from generation to generation in israel’s society.

there are other traits required by a commander – knowledge, professionalism, integrity … but most important is the understanding of life – a commander’s ability to take it or to preserve it.

and the grand finale – a rose presented to mom!

so, attention! officer on deck! … soon.

59th

imagine a photo of a beautiful display of fireworks. shot from less than 50 meters away, they break up right above our heads and the ashes drop around us. the reds and greens light up the night sky with a magical luminance. can you see them? wow! a blue one! did you see it?

me neither. the moment the fireworks began tasha began trembling of fear. i had to hug and caress her instead of my camera. so, no fireworks.

i can show you tasha though…

israel today celebrates 59 years of independence! i want to share a letter written by dorit’s grandfather exactly 59 and 1/2 years ago;

 wikipedia background

Tel Aviv, Sunday, November 30, 1947

Dear Viterbo,

I feel the need to send you and all my friends in Italy greetings from Eretz Israel in this dawn of hope and festivity. My thoughts run back to the years past when we worked, struggled, hoped together; to the friends and leaders who guided us.

The Jewish State is not yet an accomplished fact; but when, last night, after so many hours of anxious anticipation, we heard on the radio the voices of the delegates pronouncing their vote at the Assembly of the United Nations and then the proclamation of the results, we felt that something great was taking place, even if surrounded by so much pettiness.

The streets filled with people, joyous and almost incredulous. Groups of young people were running, singing, embracing each other, dancing the hora in the streets and squares.

No! It won’t be easy now: fighting, difficulties and danger are not over. The task facing us, materially and spiritually, is enough to make one tremble. But at least for a moment let’s indulge ourselves and our children in the joy of the dream made reality, even if there’s a good share of illusion.

Yesterday we were all together at Mario Ottolenghi’s house to celebrate Michael’s Bar Mitzvah. There were so many old friends and this gathering reminded me of other similar gatherings at our homes in
Italy, in a time that seems so long ago. Our friend Gad, Giorgio Sarfatti, said some simple words about the text Michael had just read quite well and he finished up by hinting at the possibility of the imminent proclamation of a Jewish State, saying that we should accept it with joy as a gift from the Lord, even if we know this State will be quite different from what we would like. It’s up to us to take action so that reality isn’t too far from the ideal. But is a father prevented from rejoicing upon the birth of his son because he knows how difficult it will be to set him on the path to the Lord, and for fear that he won’t become a good and decent man? Therefore, let’s greet this birth with joy, but without ignoring the gravity of the task that awaits us and without trying to avoid it.

I’m picking up where I left off this morning. The city is celebrating, even if news has already spread of some incidents and victims. You can see a new happiness in everyone’s eyes; something singing in our hearts. Outside Eretz Israel it’s not possible to feel this simple and complete happiness that comes from feeling yourself in unison with everyone you meet. We should thank those whose call led us into Eretz Israel even for this day alone. Everyone you meet greets you with a smile containing an intimate, though wordless meaning; the clerk in the shop, or the cashier at the bank, they can’t help giving you the traditional message Mazal Tov, good luck! The milkman, when bringing us the milk this morning, greeted us the same way, adding that now it was up to us to show we were worthy of this State, and that it would be necessary to find the road to an accord with the Arabs. My thoughts were on this too, last night, on our neighbours who live a few meters from our houses. We’ll have to find the way to an agreement.

In the streets the schoolchildren are singing. Trucks decked with flags and overflowing with young people are circulating through the streets crowded with people. Bicycles are draped in white and blue; flags, large and small, are everywhere. Even these white cement cubes that are the houses of Tel Aviv seem beautiful today standing out in the cloudless sky, bright and clear, almost as if to form an immense white and blue flag.

Boys and girls are going around with blue boxes to collect offers for Keren Kayemeth. Suddenly, the memory pops up in my mind of a day long ago, much more than thirty years ago, when I was a boy of fifteen and went from house to house delivering the white and blue Keren Kayemeth brochure. All my old friends will surely remember that day. And today I felt like a boy again; full of vitality, joy, confidence, as is possible only at fifteen. And today everyone feels that way; full of a joy and confidence that is rarely seen in Israel.

In the street I met a friend who is particularly competent in financial and economic matters and known for his prudence.  Mazal Tov! Mazal Tov! He said: “This country, believe me, can be the best in the world also from an economical point of view. It has all the ingredients to be so”. A little farther on a car passes me by, in the streets congested with cars and pedestrians. I see a white head stick out, a broad smile on an open and jovial face. And at the same time I feel some one pat me on the head and on the shoulder, as with a small boy. It’s Harzfeld,[1]the head of the agricultural settlement council. I don’t know how long it’s been since I’ve run into him, in nine years I’ve seen him five or six times; but it seems that he’s kept an incredibly vivid memory of our meeting in Italy, and of a trip we took with him and Enzo Sereni. “What are you doing? Are you working?” “Yes” “Why don’t we see you around? Come over to my place. I want to know what you’re up to”. Another pat on my shoulder and the car takes off, while Harzfeld throws himself back on the seat. And I walk away with an inexplicable lightness in my soul. In those few meaningless words, in that handshake, there was nothing; yet to me they seemed to have a deep value; who knows why? We felt united for a moment, and we needed to say so. Harzfeld planned and directed the building of dozens and dozens of new colonies; I did the same for a few houses. It seems that the humblest job, performed here, acquires a special value today, and even the fact alone of being here. Because all together, our force comes from this work and this presence. Not that they have a great value in themselves, but as the expression of a will and faith without which it would all be in vain.

If I had to say what is the characteristic that distinguishes today from all the other days I have lived up to now, I could not avoid thinking of this strange sense of lightness that I have never felt in any gathering of Jews. It’s the joy felt by children, self-confidence, confidence in help from above, the sense that everything will have to end up well (which is not a carefree unawareness of the dangers of the moment), they are the aspects of a youth that has not yet lost its enthusiasm, its unselfishness, its faith.
Israel is wonderfully young.
So let’s not be afraid of the tasks ahead, but let’s not forget why they are so arduous.

I’m often reminded of Italy’s recent history, from the Risorgimento till today. The Italian people have many points in common with us, and from their history we too could learn something in the field of politics. If we aren’t blind we’ll be able to find the path to discipline and to union; but no sacrifice will serve if we are not faithful to the spirit of our tradition, the voice of our prophets.

Don’t ask me why I’ve written you. It was the fullness of my heart that wanted to find expression. It was the same mysterious force that today invited every one of us to smile to strangers as if to friends, great friends like brothers. Maybe tomorrow it will all be different. Today even Pacifici [cf. Introduction, note 3], if he had been here, would have said, as Rav Uziel[2] suggested, the prayer Shehecheyanu, “who has brought us to reach this day”.

Love to you and all my friends,

Gualtiero Cividalli

watching her grow up

my baby is growing up and she’s no longer a baby. as a matter of fact we recently reserved the tzipori pool in the jerusalem forest and catering for her bat-mitzvah. that means hila will soon be twelve. difficult to comprehend! it seems like only yesterday she would keep me up until the small hours after midnight, refusing to fall asleep in bed, only in my arms.

she’s become a unique individual, on the verge of adulthood, already engaged in the ‘white water rapids’ of adolescence.

hila shares with me the responsibilities of caring for tasha. it’s not that the others in the family don’t help, but hila does it with her heart and is driven by her sense of responsibility, her love for tasha and her desire to help me.

i believe reaching an ultimate understanding of good parenting is achievable only when you are able to accept your children, exactly as they are. i’m sure i still have a long way to go but i try hard to accept my children, to share their interests, their feelings, to listen … and to hear. it’s often frustrating and i sometimes fail but i consider fatherhood my career and most important role in life. there’s a lot of ‘on the job training’ involved and you my children, are my best instructors.

saturday morning with the guys … and a girl too

the internet is a wonderful meeting place. over the past decade i have made friends and contacts from all over the world. some of these friendships have blossomed into meetings face to face. such was this saturday.

some men do golf, some do hunting or fishing, we do photography. my online friends gathered this saturday morning from all over the country to do photography together. to shake hands instead of exchanging emails, to have coffee together instead of private forum messages and to shoot a beautiful young model. ah yes! that was the catch! how else could we get everyone out of bed early saturday morning?

there were nine of us all together and we had a great time! it was really great to see faces instead of avatars, to talk photography, to talk about our personal lives and to get to know everyone more intimately.

the model was experienced, worked well and had a beautiful smile (not to mention the rest of her). photos are available for viewing and purchasing but you’ll have to send me an email for a link.

so what is it about a naked woman’s body that has intrigued artists since the beginning of time? my daughters asked me this question and i found it difficult to answer. but thinking about it now, i have a feeling, that even my daughters already have an idea. maybe still vague and fuzzy but it’s there. it’s the seed of their future relationships in life. it’s a promise of future generations. it’s a power they will learn to tame and use. when they do become seasoned in that female art, that’s when i’ll have to get a big stick and stand guard outside the door :-)
